Oh, did I tell you about my bike?
I’ve always wanted to be a bike person, but unfortunately, I’ve had a tough time closing the gap between reality and fantasy life on that one until recently. A while back, I inherited my beloved Grandmother’s Dahon folding bike. It seemed like the perfect thing for NYC. I attempted a few rides, but I was scared to death by the traffic and commotion of the city. The final straw was an accident where I mishandled the bike while unfolding it for a ride and it bit off a chunk of my skin (and I still have the scar to show for it 3+ years later…) Right then and there I decided maybe I was only a fantasy bicycle rider and my mom picked up the bike from my apt where it was just collecting dust.
Fast forward to the here and now. I am not a driving person, but now I am in the suburbs. I have to get to Georgetown. I don’t want to pay for parking or buy a car. So I decided I would brave a bike. I sent out a gajillion emails on craigslist for basically every ladies bike in the area under a hundred dollars and a this weekend I became the proud new owner of a very vintage blue schwinn. She is a beaut. And I’ve been commuting by bike for this whole week.
So that is my story.
